I've fished for pickerel a lot over the years, both here in VT and elsewhere. We have one nearby pond here that produces loads of them on a good morning in winter. Unlike the pickerel fishing of my youth, these fish are quite large, many over the 20-inch mark. When I was a kid if we got one 16 or 17 inches we considered it a great fish! Both my Mom and grandmother used to enjoy eating them, despite the many bones. I keep a couple larger ones these days to cook and bone-out for my cats and dog, which love them. -Jim
