I love ice fishing for bass. This season has been relatively slow though.

i try to avoid bass at all costs most days but the seem to like to gobble up out smelts and thebigger shiners no problem. late in march we take my cousins after big bass on granger and we use 4" or bigger slab shiners and they hit those regularly

we typically use medium shiners on circle hooks just like fishing lot of other species.you can also jig for bass but need patience like any jigging. In our area you can easily take 5 and 6 pond bass through the ice.problem is the pickeral are much quicker in the winter than the bass.we try to avoid them.

i find our bass to be in 20 feet of water or better. or should i say our BIG BASS. fishing this deep really helps keep the pickeral catch to a minimum.

here in vermont there are a few ponds that you can go and catch good bass in every hole. we use rapalas with a maggot. we normaly fish a reef that comes from 50 feet to 8 to 10 feet and we hammer the big smallies. we have learned to leave that 4 inch auger at homecause those 3 to 5 pounders cant come up through them and we hook into that size alot. it also saves alot of money on rapalas. i went in dec and hit some bass after loosing 25 $ in rapalas we decided to call it quits. and jigging those bass is alot more fun than yankin them up with a tip up.

bass through ice

Postby johnbr19792003 » Tue Feb 12, 2008 7:19 pm

my fav way to catch em is using a big 1/2 oz jig. the same thing you would use for flipping heavy cover in the summer. It really gets the bigger largemouths.

I've been bass fishing all my life and yesterday was the first time I tried to get them through the ice. Me and my buddy both got a smallmouth. Hopefully as I fish more I'll figure em out.
