What are you catching?

Postby NEPA » Sun Jan 10, 2010 12:02 pm

We fished a small lake in Wayne County, PA on Saturday from 9 to 3. We rigged four tip-ups with large shiners and jigged some holes using Swedish pimples with meal worms. I had over 20 flags landing one bass and about a dozen pickerel. A few of the pickerel were big and the bass was about 16 inches. We also caught a mess of perch and blue gill while jigging. Lots of fun and action.

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE THERE IS SAFE ICE IN OR AROUND SOUTH CENTRAL PA? THIS RAIN KILLED THE ICE ON MY HOME LAKE!

From what I hear you may have to travel north to find some good ice. Even some lakes in Luzern Country are not that safe and must be approached with caution. I am fishing up in Wayne County in elevations around 1500 feet. We have good ice over 10”. Consider a trip north. Good Luck and be safe.

There are many State Parks and Fish Commission Lakes. I can tell you that one of the best trout lakes in the state is Upper Woods Pond. White Oak Pond, Prompton Dam, Lower Woods pond, Duck Harbor (monster browns) and Millers Pond are all good spots. My personal favorite is a private lake with a public access called Long Pond. It has big perch, trout, and bass. If you set out some tip ups the pickerel will keep you running flags all day. You can also score some nice bass on a good day. All of these lakes are only a few miles apart.

There are also many good lakes in neighboring counties. The big lake (Wallenpaupak) is also in Wayne (and Pike) County. I don’t fish the Paupack as I prefer smaller waters. I would be happy to provide directions and the location of good bait shops.

I will be happy to provide the information. My email address is kwilliams@intecweb.com. Put something in the header so it doesn't end up in the junk mail.

The fishing over the past two weeks has been very slow. I fished last Saturday (1/23) and this Sunday (1/31). This week was the worse. I had about 8 flags and produced one perch. It hit a live bait over 3” long. Nothing on the jigging rod, but then again I don’t move around too much. More unbelievable, no pickerel.

Last week was salvaged as a huge pickerel that hit my little Swedish pimple. He was on for about 10 minutes and I had him to the hole a few times. Of course, he bit through the line, but I had a great time watching him peel line of my little reel.
This week I am going to rig two tip ups with fat-heads and two with large shiners. I am sure that the perch were after the live bait but it was too big.

I have only been to Long Pond this year. I would like to make an evening trip to Prompton (never ice fished at night before), and a trip to Upper Woods for the trout and some of the big bass I have been hearing about.

I am interested in hearing how everyone else is doing……

the ice down here is beat for the season. we were out last weekend and caught easily 100 fish each. mostly crappie but the perch bite was on sunday. swedes tipped with fatheads or waxxies took all the fish. a few fish on tip ups. they were all perch. hows the ice up north?
