I would love to catch salmon, tried many times, just haven't had any luck. I resently heard that fishing for them at dusk is the best time, is there any truth to this? Jan 1 Mass. just stocked their broodstock so they are in there.

haha thats a good question. obviously early mornings and late afternoons are the preferred times to fish but i catch them at any time of day. some times less when its bright sunshine but really they can bite at any time. i have noticed though that when they bite they bite pretty decent for a half hour or so. then a few hours might go by and there hot again for ten minutes. salmon are racers and sem to just fly around under the ice cruising for a meal. i just try to make it look good to them and hope for the big ones.

Uhhh, ok, but that's not a salmon and it doesn't appear to even be winter? Let's see the ice fishing pics. :P :P Quit getting so defensive. Just giving you back a little of your own medicine, is all... :D By the way, neither the brown you are hoilding nor the one that other fellow from Maine posted recently really look like they were in a hatchery lately. Usually the bottom edge of the tails are deformed on hatchery trout? Here's a 'Magog salmon from last year. Not a huge fish, about average for that lake, about 4.5 pounds.

PS>That brown of yours reminds me of the Champlain lake trout we always catch,...all head and no body.

My jets have been set on "cruise" all along, just noting my observations is all. No trophy browns stocked in VT lakes. Most are fingerlings or at most 8-10 inches when stocked, yet there are some whoppers taken each year. Here's one from 'Magog, taken by the son of a close friend on opening weekend last January. This kid lands some huge fish each year and has downed some impressive deer and turkeys too! And noooooo, no one helped him fight the fish. -Jim

This kid (Ian Machia) has landed more trophy fish than most adults I know! Here's Ian with a nice Champlain laker he took at one spot I took he and his dad to a few years back. -Jim

there are some pretty nice browns stocked in vt every year. 18 inches or so. Just look at the vermontfishandwildlife stocking schedual. I agree 95% are 6-8 inches when stocked though..
