favorite setup for dem crappie

Discuss fishing for black and white crappies through the ice. It's tough to beat a good school of crappies through hard water.

Try fishing suspended in the early morning or early evening, all the crappies I've ever caught are somewhere between 3 and 4 feet off bottom.
Where are they at?

I have caught them all over the place from right on the bottom to a few feet down in 20 ft of water. That is why a vex is invaluable. i have never really had much luck with minnows, I ususally use either waxies or spikes.

Crappies were biting...thats not all

Postby Jiglicious Extravaganza » Mon Feb 18, 2008 3:40 pm

We were fishing Bluegills with tiny blue and green, tear drop shaped, glittered, jig heads (size 12 hook) with waxies and slayin em.... Every once in a while we'd mark fish 2 - 3 feet off the bottom (11 feet), jig it up and BAM crappies...they were barely tapping the waxy and without a spring bobber I would have never known most of them were hitting. Without the Vexilar I would have never known they were there...and they only came in random waves. Small bait in winter was recommended to me and it worked....In three days of bluegill fishing 2 guys got 25 Crappies, 45 Bluegills, and the big surprise was the 20" LM Bass day 1, the 14" LM Bass day 2, and a 17" LM Bass day three. All on small jigs with a waxy...[/url]

My favorite crappie bait is a black Whip. I seem to get more crappies on black than any other color. I think you can still buy The Whip on sale here:

Try everything

Postby mitchellcumstein » Sat Feb 23, 2008 12:17 pm

Use every color ,size and shape. I perfer using the light jigging rod in one hole and a float in the other. Majority of the fish get caught jigging with the vexi. Try minnow heads and different types of grubs for bait. Also try using the chubby darter I've had luck with that. Glow red at night always productive.Image
