First blue gill (I think)

Postby tundraboy » Wed Feb 13, 2013 6:26 pm

I caught a few of these last weekend. They are not supposed to be where I caught them. Just need a hand identifying if you folks would take a look and let me know. These are the 2 pics I got of what I think are blue gills.

Ive had a blast chasing the sun fish(pumpkin seed i think) this year. Never caught one through the ice until this season.

These things are killing my crappy jigs. Its non stop action, and when I bring the wifeand put a small piece of live worm on her jig its pricless.

Nice looking fish. You are correct that the top two pictures are bluegill and the last two are pumpkinseed. Nice seeds at that!

Thanks dylan, this place is plugged with the seeds. Im going to do some searching to see what I can find for bigger blue gills. What is the average size for these? What is considered a slab or big one?

Are those from the honey hole or a different spot?

Size depends on the lake. For most places I fish, I would say that 7-9" is average. When they hit 10" you are getting into quality fish. Good luck and keep the pictures coming!

It looks to me in the 2 sunfish picture the one in front is a redear. They don't have as much yellow, the pectoral fins are longer than gills and pumpkinseed and they tend to grow thick bodied. Thanks for sharing the photos.

jigman, you think that those are two different types of sun fish? These are all new to me. Any input is welcome. Thanks.

I can't be positive but pumkinseeds normally have a lot more yellow. You can confirm it by the pectoral fins. The redear have longer pectorals. Some lakes have all three being gills, seeds and redear. It may even being a cross. Nice fish either way :thumb:
