Homemade tipups

Has anyone attempted to make their own tipups? If so, what materials/designs have you found to be most effective?

I made some last year. I just copied some of the ones I had but used mahgony for the stick parts aluminum for the spools, brake lines for the part for the striker. This is what they look like.

The part tht took the longest is sanding and ploying the sticks.

Those look very nice. They look like they're more effective than the ones I bought last year.

No, Unfortunately, the time has been getting away from me. I'm thinking of browsing Home Depot for materials. Do you happen to know the best place to go for materials?

The mahgony wood got at a local lumber yard. Home depot nor Lowes had what I was looking for wood. Napa auto store for the break lines. The rest was at home depot. I did get the aluminum diamond plate at a hardware store but that was because it was mismarked in my favor for price. I could have gotten it at home depot.

Well good luck on the build I had a ton of fun building mine.

Thanks, It took a couple months not working on them every day. What took the longest time was sanding and putting the urthane on them. I have two more that I am working on same design but going to make the next ones bigger for some pike fishing. Going to ad a drag to the spool for the big rigs.

What did you use for the trip mechanism (inside the brake line) ? Was it a bronze solder rod. Where did you get the spring steel for the flags? Very professional job !
Who stocked the grouper in Sebago?

Thanks! The trip mechanism was a brass or bronz rod. Not sure if it was a soldering rod it was easy to bend and felt strudy enough. Just can'r bend it to many times or it will break. I used them all last year with no problems and will be giving them a good workout this coming weekend. The steel spring I got from kittery trading post. They had replacement steel and flags.
