Wow, you received more than your share of opinions, but I will still give mine. I always set the hook while the fish is on the run, I will lightly pinch the line during the run until I feel a tug, then I lightly set the hook. I see some guys set it quickly and with lots of arm action, I would be afraid to rip the hook and bait right out of the fishes mouth. Good Luck

I agree on the gentle hookset! I've taught many guys how to icefish and that is the first thing that newcomers do wrong. They set the hook with the same speed and pressure they do with a rod and reel.....problem is th rod is flexible which requires a pretty hard set......squidding line on a tip up does not strech so a lighter hook set is necessary or the hook will be pulled right out! Great topic and lots of advice!

I use 8 lb flourecarbon leader with size 4 hook/shinner under a 3/8 oz weight fishing a few feet under ice, there were several flags but couldn't land any fish.
