Clams always cold??

Postby eyeseeker » Thu Dec 13, 2007 12:07 am

I just purchased a 2007 Clam 6800, 6x8, 6'3'" interior height, shelter. It's an awesome house! except it just doesn't get warm in there. I moved up from a 20 year old 4x8 suitcase portable with plywood floors and black canvas, with an interior height of 6'4" and that was very comfortable in all weather conditions..Before anybody jumps the gun, I understand I've gained 16 square feet of space to heat. The weather has been mild here the last 3 nights I've used it, 5 above, -10 wind chill, I don't feel any drafts around any of the zippers, in fact the walls barely sway in the wind! I bank the bottom..I use a Mr. Heater sunflower heater, (new last winter along with new 20# propane tank) and that is in great working order. I need to have it on Medium or high at all times. The holes stay open without any problems. I dress plenty warm, wool socks, wool bibs, Jacket, sorels. etc. Even my fishing buddies have noticed the difference

I'm going to concede to the idea that I've gotten older, and that I'm not out in the elements, but if anybody has had this samething, let me know.[/img]
Piss on work, I'm goin ICE FISHING!

I would imagine it's the extra space and that you're getting older. The new materials are better than the older ones at retaining heat.

I had a 6x8 Clam also and it is a big step up from a 4x8. Just a couple of things you might want to try. First of all, go out and buy one of those cheap battery operated fans. They usually have a clamp on them so they can be placed anywhere. Getting some air movement will help circulate the heat and help get the heat off of the ceiling. Also, I went and got some cheap indoor outdoor carpet (not the astro turf stuff) but rather the nicer looking stuff that looks more like carpet. I cut two big squares and pop riveted it to the floor on each side. This really helped warm the floor up and also keeps ya from slipping on the plastic. Even with these tips you will still probably need to move up to the double burner mr. heater hope this helps.

If you actually figure the CUBIC feet, you are adding 50% of the total enclosed area of your old house. I think a sunflower heater is 7,000 btu, so by rights you should need a 10,500 btu heater to keep it as comfortable as your old house.

A basic "Mr. Heater" should be more then enough for a Clam 6800.

A "Mr. Heater" is good for 200 sq. ft. A Clam 6800 is only 48 sq. ft. You should have more then enought heat.
18 to 80, blind, cripled, or crazy, if they can't walk I'll "Hook'em".

I use this one in my two man Otter. It works great. I like to be warm so dragging the larger tank is ok with me. I just take one off the grill that is 1/3 full rather than a full one. This one will keep me warm wearing a shirt and no hat or gloves when it is below 0 and windy.
