smelt gig/spearing

Has anybody ever speared smelt? If so were i can pick one up at? What the differentances in them? any help would be great

No kidding here, real ? bud. Last year up at higgins my father in law and I were fishing the shallows and had 100's of fish under us at all times but just couldnt get them to bite that night. Check out this video if you still think its a joke. Looks fun

Too cool. I am well versed on the lock jaw the mini barracudas can have. I just have never heard of spearing them. My buddy and I have often sat there and looked at the little bastards but could not figure out a legal way to get them. I am pretty sure I can make one of these spears by taking a frog spear and bending and grinding it to the shape that is needed.

Yeah I think I came up with something but I dont know what to use for the handle. I think it would be fun to try.

same thing happened to us this last sunday, we had a ton of smelt under us and only caught a few. was cool seeing them all swimming around.
You might want to try some of the phone numbers in the DNR book to try and contact a C.O. and ask about the legality of spearing smelt. There is also a section in the guide book and I dont remember seeing smelt in the spearing section, does sound like it would be fun to try and hit them, not sure how much of the fish would be wasted tho.
