One of my very best baits for big lake trout is dead smelt, fished right on or near bottom. Browns will sometimes take a dead shiner, fished just under the ice, as will brookies. I seriously doubt rainbows will take them though. I have better luck with a piece of worm or crawler, for rainbows. -Jim
